In an important development, Mehbooba Mufti, daughter of deceased J&K Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Syed, was today unanimously elected the leader of PDP’s legislature party.
She is set to become the first women chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir ending the uncertainty of over two and a half months following her father’s death in January this year.
In a parallel development, BJP MLA from Billawar, Dr. Nirmal Singh was also elected leader of BJP’s legislature party in Jammu & Kashmir ,paving the way for his becoming Deputy Chief Minister once again.
According to media reports, both the leaders are likely to meet J&K governor NN Vohra on Saturday to stake the claim to form the government.
BJP on Friday said that the party would tomorrow discuss certain issues with PDP before meeting the governor.
BJP State President Sat Sharma said that it will, however, first have a meeting with PDP to discuss certain issues.
56 year old Mehbooba Mufti would be the first woman chief minister of muslim majority Jammu & Kashmir. The state has a long and troubled history of insurgency and sufferred violence emnated from the groups supported by Pakistan.
