Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched an ambitious 8,000 crore rupees scheme to provide 5 crore free LPG connections to poor families across the country from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh.
While starting the scheme from Maldeypur in Ballia, Prime Minister said under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, free LPG connections will be provided in the name of women members of BPL households.
Under the Ujjwala scheme, 5 crore free LPG connections will be given to poor families in three years. One crore and fifty lakhs such connections will be given in the first year itself.
The Prime Minister said, BJP led NDA Government has been working for the uplift of the poverty-stricken people through people’s participation.
Targeting the previous UPA government, Prime Minister said UPA governments made many policies but these schemes were not formulated while keeping the interest of poor people in mind.
He said poverty can be eradicated only if poor are empowered, given resources and opportunities as well as education, jobs, houses, electricity and drinking water. The Prime Minister also expressed his commitment for cleaning of river Ganga.
