In a bid to end the deadlock over the government formation in the state, Jammu & Kashmir Governor NN Vohra has called a meeting on Tuesday with both PDP and BJP to discuss the issue. The state is under the president’s rule since 10 January after the death of sitting chief minister and PDP chief Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on 07 January.
Governor NN Vohra has asked PDP and BJP to clarify their stands on govt formation on Tuesday.
The Governor has asked PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and state BJP President Sat Pal Sharma to meet him separately to discuss the issue of government formation in the state.
PDP Legislature Party met in Srinagar on Monday where Mehbooba was authorised to convey PDP’s point of view on government formation to the Governor.
State BJP’s core group met in Jammu on Monday and decided to consult the central leadership before meeting the Governor on Tuesday.
The party said that PDP should first elect the leader of their legislature party.
Members of BJP’s J&K core group are in New Delhi to meet BJP central leadership. The party has however indicated that it is in favour of continuing the alliance with PDP.
Uncertainty is continuing over govt formation in J&K since the demise of the then Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed last month.
There were indications that his daughter Mehbooba would succeed him but she did not take oath as Chief Minister which led to Governor’s rule in J&K.
Reports indicate that some leaders in PDP are not in favour of forming a govt with BJP again.
PDP is the single largest party with 27 MLAs and BJP the second largest with 25 MLAs in the 87 member J&K assembly.
Governor’s meetings with PDP and BJP leaders on Tuesday could lend some clarity on the political future of the state in the near term.
