Indian Air Force receives first twin-seater version of LCA Tejas: In a momentous event for India’s aviation history, the Indian Air Force (IAF) received its first Tejas twin-seater trainer version aircraft on Wednesday (October 4). This significant milestone marks the handover of the first Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) twin-seater trainer version aircraft to the IAF by India’s state owned aircraft manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
Designed with the strategic intent of transitioning budding pilots into fighter pilots, the LCA Tejas Twin Seater is a remarkable achievement. This delivery is part of the Tejas contract between HAL and the IAF, with a requirement for eight twin-seater trainer aircraft.

The LCA Tejas Twin Seater is specifically designed to train budding pilots and streamline their transition into fighter pilots. It serves as an essential step in the IAF’s continuous efforts to enhance its training modules. HAL aims to fulfill the IAF’s training requirements comprehensively and plans to deliver a total of 18 twin-seaters LCA Tejas aircraft.
As of now, the delivery schedule includes eight aircraft by fiscal year 2023-24 and the remaining ten by 2026-27. It is expected that additional orders from the IAF will follow.

LCA Tejas – 4.5 generation lightweight fighter
The LCA Tejas Twin Seater is a lightweight, all-weather multi-role 4.5 generation aircraft equipped with advanced technologies. These include relaxed static stability, quadruplex fly-by-wire flight control, carefree manoeuvring, an advanced glass cockpit, integrated digital avionics systems, and an airframe made of advanced composite materials.
This high-tech aircraft aligns with India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative, ensuring the nation’s self-sufficiency in the defense sector.
LCA Tejas export opportunities
HAL’s achievements with the LCA Tejas platform extend beyond India’s borders. The company has submitted customized proposals to several friendly foreign countries, aiming to contribute to India’s export targets in line with the government’s vision for self-reliance.
